Reported pharmacodynamic effects include transient rises in blood pressure and heart rate, flushing, nausea and headache, appearing soon after dosing and resolving within hours. These responses were dose-related in early studies and shaped the label's cardiovascular cautions and blood pressure monitoring advice. Gastrointestinal upset is the most frequent reason cited for discontinuation in trials. Whether the vascular signal attenuates with repeated use is not settled. Central effects on desire are described as emerging over weeks rather than immediately, which points to a cumulative rather than acute process.
The compound binds several melanocortin receptor subtypes rather than a single target, with the strongest functional activity reported at MC4R and measurable activity at MC1R, MC3R and MC5R. MC4R populations are dense in hypothalamic nuclei that integrate energy balance, autonomic tone and reproductive behaviour, which is the anatomical basis for the proposed pro-desire effect. Because binding is not subtype-selective, pigmentary and vascular effects accompany central activity. Improving subtype selectivity is an active area of analogue design. Direct causal mapping from receptor occupancy to reported desire change in humans is not fully established.
Compared with the related compound melanotan II, PT-141 shows markedly weaker activation of receptors tied to pigmentation. This difference stems from subtle structural variations that alter affinity distribution across receptor subtypes. Investigators propose that such selectivity produces a different side effect profile in specific applications. However, downstream consequences of prolonged receptor activation remain uncertain in the literature. Published studies do not fully agree on the duration of signaling pathway activity and the mechanisms of desensitization.
From a pharmacokinetic standpoint, the peptide is usually delivered by injection because oral bioavailability is very low; proteases in the digestive tract degrade it rapidly. After subcutaneous administration, plasma concentrations reach a peak within roughly one hour. Its elimination half-life is relatively short, with most reports placing it in the range of a few hours. Nasal formulations have also been examined, though absorption varies widely between individuals. Metabolism proceeds mainly through peptidase cleavage, and the resulting products are excreted by the kidneys.
PT-141 initiates cellular signaling by binding to specific subtypes within the melanocortin receptor family. These receptors belong to the G protein-coupled receptor superfamily, and activation raises intracellular cyclic adenosine monophosphate levels. This cascade ultimately influences neuronal circuits in the central nervous system that are associated with sexual desire and arousal. Research indicates the compound's action concentrates in hypothalamic regions rather than peripheral tissues, which helps explain some observed pharmacological features. The selectivity of receptor binding underlies its functional differences.

Bremelanotide acts as a non-selective agonist at melanocortin receptors, with reported activity at MC1R, MC3R, MC4R and MC5R. The proposed basis for its central effects is activation of MC4R populations in the hypothalamus, a region associated with appetite and reproductive signalling. Because the peptide carries a net positive charge and polar side chains, it does not cross biological membranes freely, which is one reason oral administration is not the standard route. Effects generally appear within an hour of parenteral administration and are described as centrally mediated rather than peripheral.
Bremelanotide, developed under the code PT-141, is a synthetic cyclic heptapeptide analogue of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone. Its structure is Ac-Nle-cyclo[Asp-His-D-Phe-Arg-Trp-Lys]-OH, with a lactam bridge joining the aspartate and lysine side chains. The molecule has the formula C50H68N14O10 and a monoisotopic mass near 1025 daltons. It is commonly prepared as the acetate salt and appears as a white to off-white lyophilised powder in solid form. The free acid is the pharmacologically relevant species, while the counter-ion improves handling and dissolution.
Clinical development proceeded through two routes of administration. An intranasal formulation advanced first, but variable absorption and tolerability problems led to a switch to subcutaneous injection. The United States Food and Drug Administration approved the subcutaneous product in 2019 for hypoactive sexual desire disorder in premenopausal women. Marketing rights subsequently changed hands, and commercial availability has fluctuated since approval. Use in men, in postmenopausal women, and in combination with other agents remains outside the approved label.
Outside the approved product, bremelanotide circulates as a research chemical sold by peptide vendors, often labelled PT-141. Such material is not manufactured under pharmaceutical quality standards, and independent testing has repeatedly found content that differs from the label. Analytical certificates supplied with a purchase are not strong evidence of purity because they are usually generated by the seller. Online discussion tends to blur the distinction between the approved drug and unregulated powder, which complicates interpretation of reported experiences.
Bremelanotide is a synthetic cyclic heptapeptide developed under the research code PT-141. The code reflects its position in an internal compound series rather than a chemical classification, and the name bremelanotide was later adopted for regulatory filings. Structurally it belongs to the melanocortin peptide family and shares a core sequence motif with alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone. The compound is supplied as an acetate salt in aqueous solution for injection. In reference literature it is indexed under both the code and the generic name, a dual listing that can complicate database searches.
Early work on melanocortin analogs in the 1980s and 1990s produced peptides intended to influence pigmentation and appetite. One of these, melanotan II, was observed to affect sexual desire as an incidental finding in self-administration reports. Researchers then pursued analogs with altered receptor selectivity and improved handling characteristics, and PT-141 emerged from that program in the late 1990s. The development path moved from dermatology and metabolism toward a central nervous system application, a shift that shaped both trial designs and the eventual label.
"Beef was stowed on the larboard side and pork to starboard; flour, rice, and peas/beans in the wings. Stowage, as with the water casks below them, is begun from aft and worked forward. Casks in the spirit room are stowed from the forward bulkhead aft. In all cases, the largest containers are closest to the keelson, with sizes diminishing as they are laid outboard. All casks are laid bung up." Foodstuffs may well be in the hold for months, perhaps years. Two hundred years ago life ashore was tough and life at sea had the advantage that at least you would get three meals a day, however grim they may have been.
==== Surreptitious insulin use ==== When individuals take insulin without needing it, to purposefully induce hypoglycemia, this is referred to as surreptitious insulin use or factitious hypoglycemia. Some people may use insulin to induce weight loss, whereas for others this may be due to malingering or factitious disorder, which is a psychiatric disorder. Inappropriate usage of insulin is most common in people who have had exposure to diabetes management, such as healthcare workers, people who have relatives with diabetes, or people with diabetes themselves. The classic way to identify surreptitious insulin use is through blood work revealing high insulin levels with low C-peptide and proinsulin.
==== Fluorocarbons ==== Fluorocarbons and especially perfluorocarbons are excellent substrate materials for the creation of superhydrophobic surfaces due to their extremely low surface energy. These materials are synthesized by replacing hydrogen atoms with fluorine atoms of a hydrocarbon.

Skin whitening, also known as skin lightening and skin bleaching, is the practice of using chemical substances in an attempt to lighten the skin or provide an even skin color by reducing the melanin concentration in the skin. Several chemicals have been shown to be effective in skin whitening, while some have proven to be toxic or have questionable safety profiles. This includes mercury compounds which may cause neurological problems and kidney problems. In a number of African countries, above 25% of women regularly use skin-whitening products. In Asia, this number is around 40%. In India, over 50% of skin-care product sales are attributed to skin-lightening formulations. In Pakistan, where skin lightening products are popular, creams have been found to contain toxic levels of hydroquinone and mercury. Efforts to lighten the skin date back to at least the 16th century in Asia. While a number of agents — such as kojic acid and alpha hydroxy acid — are allowed in cosmetics in Europe, a number of others such as hydroquinone and tretinoin are not. While some countries do not allow mercury compounds in cosmetics, others still do, and they can be purchased online.

Phosphate analysis reveals high concentrations of cremations in the barrows, in the form of satellite and secondary burials in the round barrows. This suggests that the primary burials may have been of chiefs, or socially powerful/respected people, and that some people may have paid to be buried close to the person they respected or followed.

=== China === In 2024, China’s supreme court and chief prosecutor jointly issued the Interpretation of Several Issues Concerning the Application of Law in Handling Criminal Cases of Money Laundering (2024). In American and British English, this title would translate to Money Laundering Prosecution Guidelines, and they explain how Criminal Law act section 191 applies to money laundering proceeds from specific unlawful activities. The guidelines treat money laundering done for concealment of criminal proceeds as a section 191 criminal offense both when tied to the offender’s own unlawful activity and when tied to unlawful activity committed by others, and directs courts to assess whether a defendant met a knowledge or reason-to-know standard based on totality-of-the-circumstances factors. The guidelines also identify aggravating circumstances where at least 5,000,000 yuan is laundered with specified sentencing enhancements, sets mandatory minimum fine amounts of 10,000 yuan for sentences up to five years imprisonment or jail and 200,000 yuan for sentences of five to ten years, superseding prior guidance from 2009 money laundering adjudicative guidelines. It is regulated by the China Anti-Money Laundering Monitoring and Analysis Center

The number average molecular mass of a polymer can be determined by gel permeation chromatography, viscometry via the (Mark–Houwink equation), colligative methods such as vapor pressure osmometry, end-group determination or proton NMR. High number-average molecular mass polymers may be obtained only with a high fractional monomer conversion in the case of step-growth polymerization, as per the Carothers' equation.
Cited half-life: the median age of the articles that were cited in Journal Citation Reports each year. For example, if a journal's half-life in 2005 is 5, that means the citations from 2001 to 2005 are half of all the citations from that journal in 2005, and the other half of the citations precede 2001. Aggregate impact factor for a subject category: it is calculated taking into account the number of citations to all journals in the subject category and the number of articles from all the journals in the subject category. Immediacy index: the number of citations the articles in a journal receive in a given year divided by the number of articles published. Journal citation indicator (JCI): a JIF that adjusts for scientific field; it is similar to Source Normalized Impact per Paper, calculated based on the Scopus database. JCI is available for all journals in the Web of Science Core Collection (WoS CC)—including the AHCI, ESCI, BCI, CPCI—while JIF is only available for the SCIE and SSCI; however, starting in June 2023, JIF will also be issued for all journals in the WoS CC. JIF quartile ranking: a rank based on the four quartiles within a given subject or topic category. JIF percentile ranking: a percentile rank computed for a particular subject category. A given journal may attain a different quartile or percentile in different categories. As with the impact factor, there are some nuances to this: for example, Clarivate excludes certain article types (such as news items, correspondence, and errata) from the denominator.
In 2000, the World Health Organization redefined "carcinoid", but this new definition has not been accepted by all practitioners. This has led to some complexity in distinguishing between carcinoid and other neuroendocrine tumors in the literature. According to the American Cancer Society, the 2000 WHO definition states: The WHO now divides these growths into neuroendocrine tumors and neuroendocrine cancers. Neuroendocrine tumors are growths that look benign but that might possibly be able to spread to other parts of the body. Neuroendocrine cancers are abnormal growths of neuroendocrine cells which can spread to other parts of the body.
Evidence indicating that proximity in principal component analysis in the studies of morphological variation is not necessarily indicative of close phylogenetic affinities of fossil hominins is presented by Raskin et al. (2026). Evidence indicating that hominins repeatedly inhabited areas of Africa with climate suitable for both cutaneous and visceral leishmaniasis during their evolutionary history is presented by Trájer (2026). Evidence from the study of ethnohistorical and ethnographic records of modern endurance pursuit hunters, indicating that optimization of subsistence efficiency and signaling of hunting prowess were likely the primary selective pressures in the evolution of a running gait of early hominins, is presented by Winterhalder & Morin (2026). Joordens & Schagatay (2026) argue that exceptional stamina and aerobic endurance of humans compared to other apes might be a result of underwater foraging and changes in cardiorespiratory physiology related to development of endurance breath-hold diving by coastal hominin populations. Hunter et al. (2026) compare the carpal morphology of apes (including fossil hominins and modern humans), providing evidence of hominins and extant African apes sharing morphological features of carpal morphology that are likely linked to knuckle walking, and argue that human wrist evolved from an African ape-like wrist.

MC4R is regarded as the primary mediator on the basis of binding and functional assays. Other subtypes are also engaged, which helps explain flushing and related side effects. The step from receptor activation to reported desire change remains partly inferential.
Elimination is rapid, with a half-life of a few hours. An active fragment circulates after breakdown, so biological activity may outlast measurable parent drug. This is one reason single-timepoint measurements are limited.
Because breakdown is mainly proteolytic rather than cytochrome-dependent, classic metabolic interactions are less likely. Agents affecting blood pressure could still matter. Formal interaction studies are sparse.
It primarily activates specific subtypes in the melanocortin receptor family. These receptors are G protein-coupled and mediate signaling mainly within the central nervous system.
