The short version of cyclic heptapeptide fits in a sentence. The long version — which is the one that helps — is below.

Development began with intranasal formulations investigated for erectile dysfunction, but blood pressure elevation limited that route and prompted a switch to subcutaneous delivery. Clinical testing then shifted toward hypoactive sexual desire disorder in premenopausal women, and a subcutaneous product received United States approval in 2019. Later trials examined other populations with mixed results, and questions about effect size, durability and patient selection remain open in the peer-reviewed literature. Research interest continues in parallel with the broader melanocortin field, where several synthetic analogues are studied together.
PT-141 is the research code for bremelanotide, a cyclic heptapeptide derived from alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone. The molecule belongs to the melanocortin receptor agonist family and shows highest affinity for the MC4 receptor subtype, with weaker activity at MC1, MC3 and MC5. Its structure retains the core His-Phe-Arg-Trp sequence that defines melanocortin recognition, while cyclization and terminal modifications improve metabolic stability relative to the parent hormone. Early work classified the compound as a centrally acting agent rather than a peripherally acting vasodilator, which shaped subsequent development priorities.
Evidence outside the studied population is sparse. Trials have concentrated on premenopausal women with a defined diagnosis, and data for postmenopausal women, men, and people taking interacting medications remain limited. Non-prescription use of the peptide for comparable goals is widespread but is not supported by published controlled data. Observed changes in blood pressure have drawn attention to cardiovascular monitoring during use. The literature generally frames the compound as a targeted receptor agonist rather than a general libido enhancer, and basic questions about mechanism and long-term safety are unresolved.
Bremelanotide functions as an agonist at several melanocortin receptor subtypes, with the strongest functional activity reported at the MC4 subtype. MC4 receptors sit in hypothalamic circuits that influence appetite, energy balance, and components of sexual behaviour. Rodents lacking functional MC4 receptors show altered mating behaviour, which supports a role for this pathway in desire. The precise sequence of events connecting receptor activation to reported human effects remains only partly characterised. Because the same receptor family governs pigmentation and inflammatory signalling, selectivity is a recurring theme in pharmacological discussion.

Whether the behavioral effect originates centrally, peripherally, or through both remains an active question. Animal experiments using receptor antagonists and site-specific injections point toward hypothalamic melanocortin circuits as a key locus, but translating those findings to humans is not straightforward. Blood pressure changes observed in trials suggest a vascular component that may be peripherally mediated. The relationship between receptor occupancy and reported effect has not been mapped in humans, and no validated biomarker predicts response. This gap makes it difficult to explain individual variability on pharmacological grounds alone.
Bremelanotide acts as an agonist at melanocortin receptors, a family of five G-protein-coupled receptors labeled MC1 through MC5. Binding studies indicate activity at several of these subtypes rather than strict selectivity for one. Signalling proceeds mainly through Gs-mediated activation of adenylyl cyclase, raising intracellular cyclic AMP. The MC4 receptor, expressed in hypothalamic and limbic circuits, is widely regarded as the subtype most relevant to sexual response. Because the molecule is not subtype-selective, effects at other melanocortin receptors are expected and are used to explain some observed side effects.
The peptide contains seven amino acids arranged in a ring, closed by a lactam bridge between a side-chain acid and an amine. This cyclic constraint holds the backbone in a defined conformation and increases resistance to enzymatic breakdown relative to linear analogs. N-terminal acetylation and a C-terminal amide further protect the molecule from exopeptidases. The result is a compound with a comparatively long circulation time for a small peptide. Structural modification of the bridge alters receptor affinity, which is one reason analogs in this family differ in their subtype preferences.
White adipose tissue or white fat is one of the two types of adipose tissue found in mammals. The other kind is brown adipose tissue. White adipose tissue is composed of monolocular adipocytes. In humans, the healthy amount of white adipose tissue varies with age, but composes between 6–25% of body weight in adult men and 14–35% in adult women. Its cells contain a single large fat droplet, which forces the nucleus to be squeezed into a thin rim at the periphery. They have receptors for insulin, sex hormones, norepinephrine, and glucocorticoids. White adipose tissue is used for energy storage. Upon release of insulin from the pancreas, white adipose cells' insulin receptors cause a dephosphorylation cascade that leads to the inactivation of hormone-sensitive lipase. It was previously thought that upon release of glucagon from the pancreas, glucagon receptors cause a phosphorylation cascade that activates hormone-sensitive lipase, causing the breakdown of the stored fat to fatty acids, which are exported into the blood and bound to albumin, and glycerol, which is exported into the blood freely. There is actually no evidence at present that glucagon has any effect on lipolysis in white adipose tissue. Glucagon is now thought to act exclusively on the liver to trigger glycogenolysis and gluconeogenesis. The trigger for this process in white adipose tissue is instead now thought to be adrenocorticotropic hormone, adrenaline and noradrenaline. Fatty acids are taken up by muscle and cardiac tissue as a fuel source, and glycerol is taken up by the liver for gluconeogenesis.
== History == NMS was known about as early as 1956, shortly after the introduction of the first phenothiazines. NMS was first described in 1960 by French clinicians who had been working on a study involving haloperidol. They characterized the condition that was associated with the side effects of haloperidol "syndrome malin des neuroleptiques", which was translated to neuroleptic malignant syndrome.
=== Infectious diseases === Imaging infections with molecular imaging technologies can improve diagnosis and treatment follow-up. Clinically, PET has been widely used to image bacterial infections using FDG to identify the infection-associated inflammatory response. Three different PET contrast agents have been developed to image bacterial infections in vivo are [18F]maltose, [18F]maltohexaose, and [18F]2-fluorodeoxysorbitol (FDS). FDS has the added benefit of being able to target only Enterobacteriaceae.

=== Adolescence and prodrome === The onset of BPD symptoms typically occurs during adolescence or early adulthood, with possible early signs in childhood. Predictive symptoms in adolescents include body image issues, extreme sensitivity to rejection, behavioral challenges, non-suicidal self-injury, seeking exclusive relationships, and profound shame. Although many adolescents exhibit these symptoms without developing BPD, those who do are significantly more likely to develop the disorder and potentially face long-term social challenges. BPD is recognized as a stable and valid diagnosis during adolescence, supported by the DSM-5 and ICD-11. Early detection and treatment of BPD in young individuals are emphasized in national guidelines across various countries, including the US, Australia, the UK, Spain, and Switzerland, highlighting the importance of early intervention. Historically, diagnosing BPD during adolescence was met with caution, due to concerns about the accuracy of diagnosing young individuals, the potential misinterpretation of normal adolescent behaviors, stigma, and the stability of personality during this developmental stage. Even so, research has confirmed the validity and clinical utility of the BPD diagnosis in adolescents, though misconceptions persist among mental health care professionals, contributing to clinical reluctance in diagnosing and a key barrier to the provision of effective treatment of BPD in this population.

However, only Lockyer proposed that the line was due to a new element, which he named after the Sun. The formal discovery of the element was made in 1895 by chemists Sir William Ramsay, Per Teodor Cleve, and Nils Abraham Langlet, who found helium emanating from the uranium ore cleveite, which is no longer regarded as a separate mineral species, but as a variety of uraninite. In 1903, large reserves of helium were found in natural gas fields in parts of the United States, by far the largest supplier of the gas. Liquid helium is used in cryogenics (its largest single use, consuming about a quarter of production), and in the cooling of superconducting magnets, with its main commercial application in MRI scanners. Helium's other industrial uses—as a pressurizing and purge gas, as a protective atmosphere for arc welding, and in processes such as growing crystals to make silicon wafers—account for half of the gas produced. A small but well-known use is as a lifting gas in balloons and airships. As with any gas whose density differs from that of air, inhaling a small volume of helium temporarily changes the timbre and quality of the human voice. In scientific research, the behavior of the two fluid phases of helium-4 (helium I and helium II) is important to researchers studying quantum mechanics (in particular the property of superfluidity) and to those looking at the phenomena, such as superconductivity, produced in matter near absolute zero. On Earth, it is relatively rare—5.2 ppm by volume in the atmosphere.
The images produced through radiographic procedures are used for interpretation by radiologists, and depending on their education, training, and the regulations of the country in which they practice, radiographers in some regions also have an extended role in image interpretation and reporting.
== Delivery == For a Morpholino to be effective, it must be delivered past the cell membrane into the cytosol of a cell. Once in the cytosol, Morpholinos freely diffuse between the cytosol and nucleus, as demonstrated by the nuclear splice-modifying activity of Morpholinos observed after microinjection into the cytosol of cells. Different methods are used for delivery into embryos, into cultured cells or into adult animals. A microinjection apparatus is usually used for delivery into an embryo, with injections most commonly performed at the single-cell or few-cell stage; an alternative method for embryonic delivery is electroporation, which can deliver oligos into tissues of later embryonic stages. Common techniques for delivery into cultured cells include the Endo-Porter peptide (which causes the Morpholino to be released from endosomes), the Special Delivery system (no longer commercially available, used a Morpholino-DNA heteroduplex and an ethoxylated polyethylenimine delivery reagent), electroporation, or scrape loading. Delivery into adult tissues is usually difficult, though there are a few systems allowing useful uptake of unmodified Morpholino oligos (including uptake into muscle cells with Duchenne muscular dystrophy or the vascular endothelial cells stressed during balloon angioplasty). Though they permeate through intercellular spaces in tissues effectively, unconjugated PMOs have limited distribution into the cytosol and nuclear spaces within healthy tissues following IV administration.
Crocetta is crossed by large and modern avenues, such as Corso Duca degli Abruzzi, Corso Galileo Ferraris, and Corso Einaudi. These avenues feature long rows of trees, symbolic of Turin's typical urbanity. However, the most popular avenue is Corso De Gasperi, which, albeit smaller than other avenues of the district, hosts one of the most fashionable open markets of the city, the so-called Mercato della Crocetta, in which it is possible to find some discounted branded clothing among the more popular ones. The Western border of Crocetta is instead an example of contemporary architecture. The huge avenue, made up of Corso Mediterraneo and Corso Castelfidardo, is part of Spina Centrale boulevard and was recently built over the old railway (now undergrounded): as a result, the avenue is very large (up to 60 m (200 ft)) and modern, having been rebuilt with valuable materials, including a characteristic lighting system supported by white high poles. This avenue hosts some examples of contemporary art, such as Mario Merz's Igloo fountain or the Per Kirkeby's Opera per Torino monument in Largo Orbassano. The East side of the district is also known as Borgo San Secondo named after the church of the same name standing in Via San Secondo, a major street in the neighbourhood. This is near Porta Nuova railway station and is older than the rest of the district, featuring several apartment buildings from the late 19th century, to include the birthplace and home of author Primo Levi on Corso Re Umberto. A local open market is held in Piazza San Secondo and along Via Legnano.
== Background == Degeneracy of the genetic code was identified by Lagerkvist. For instance, codons GAA and GAG both specify glutamic acid and exhibit redundancy; but, neither specifies any other amino acid and thus are not ambiguous or demonstrate no ambiguity. The codons encoding one amino acid may differ in any of their three positions; however, more often than not, this difference is in the second or third position. For instance, the amino acid glutamic acid is specified by GAA and GAG codons (difference in the third position); the amino acid leucine is specified by UUA, UUG, CUU, CUC, CUA, CUG codons (difference in the first or third position); and the amino acid serine is specified by UCA, UCG, UCC, UCU, AGU, AGC (difference in the first, second, or third position). Degeneracy results because there are more codons than encodable amino acids. For example, if there were two bases per codon, then only 16 amino acids could be coded for (4²=16). Because at least 21 codes are required (20 amino acids plus stop) and the next largest number of bases is three, then 4³ gives 64 possible codons, meaning that some degeneracy must exist.

== Case studies == The combination of the longevity of sugiol in environmental samples and its presence in only specific families of plants make it an excellent biomarker. Detection of sugiol in combination with other biomarkers like ferruginol or other diterpenes can also help to bolster the identification of the sample, as well as to narrow the scope of possible identities to only a few specific conifer families. Sugiol has been utilized in the identification of extinct plant taxa such as Protopodocarpoxylon, and Taxodioxylori gypsaceum.
== Nutrition == NATO bases the nutritional content requirement on a reference soldier weighing 79 kg (174 lb), who on normal operations would have an energy expenditure of approximately 3,600 kcal per day. For combat operations, energy expenditure is estimated to be 4,900 kcal per day; however, this is seen to be a worst-case scenario.

Most soy protein is a relatively heat-stable storage protein. This heat stability enables soy food products requiring high temperature cooking, such as tofu, soy milk and textured vegetable protein (soy flour) to be made. Soy protein is essentially identical to the protein of other legume seeds and pulses. Soy is a complete protein (it contains all 9 essential amino acids). It is a good source of protein for vegetarians and vegans or for people who want to reduce the amount of meat they eat, according to the US Food and Drug Administration:

The code designates bremelanotide, a cyclic heptapeptide melanocortin receptor agonist. It served as an internal research identifier before the compound entered formal clinical development. The code and the generic name refer to the same molecule.
MC4R is generally described as the principal target, based on binding affinity and functional assays. Activity at MC1R, MC3R and MC5R is reported as weaker. Receptor selectivity is one reason the compound was pursued for central rather than vascular effects.
Both are synthetic melanocortin analogues built on a similar cyclic peptide scaffold. Bremelanotide is described in the literature as a metabolite-derived analogue of melanotan II rather than the same substance. The two differ in terminal modifications, which affect half-life and receptor profile.
The approved formulation is given by subcutaneous injection and is used on an as-needed basis rather than on a fixed daily schedule. An intranasal version was studied earlier but did not reach the same stage of development. Route of delivery strongly affects how quickly the peptide appears in circulation.
